Lidar Systems

Lidar (Light detection and ranging) systems are remote sensing instruments that measure air dynamics, affecting critical operations, such as strong winds, low-level wind shear, gust fronts, turbulence, and wake vortices. Like radars, which measure the Doppler shift, lidars emit electromagnetic pulses and detect reflected pulses to determine radial wind velocities. However, whereas a weather radar detects hydrometeors, a meteorological lidar detects the backscatter signal from aerosols located in the atmosphere.

Lidar is an essential tool in any mission-critical situation in which timely, reliable, clear air wind data is an operational component. Lidar provides vital information for air quality management to understand the effects of pollution on cities. Wind farms require precise wind information for optimal turbine management. High-quality lidar provides high-resolution and accurate inputs in a meteorological service’s numerical weather forecasts.

For airport operations, a lidar system in combination with a weather radar and an LLWAS system offers the perfect solution for an all-weather, three-dimensional detection of hazards.
