The Peruvian university UDEP (University of Piura) has awarded Selex ES GmbH, a Leonardo company, with a contract to install the first Rainscanner weather radar system in Peru.

The weather radar will be used for scientific research in the areas of meteorology, climatology, ecology and agricultural production. Furthermore, the Rainscanner will detect and monitor eco-climatic threats that may result in disasters for the northern coast of Peru, especially during the El Niño Phenomenon, which produces heavy rains on the northern coast of Peru and southern Ecuador.

More concretely, the Rainscanner shall be used to monitor rainfall in real time and with a good space-time resolution in the basins and micro-basins of the coast of the Piura region. The data obtained will enable the identification of the provinces and districts, which suffer the highest rainfall in the region in order to provide early warnings of floods and avalanches of the Piura and Chira rivers.
